10 Easy Cricut Projects for Beginners (You Can Make Today!)

Updated: May 10

By Tiffany | Winged Panda

If you've just unboxed your Cricut machine and have absolutely no idea where to start — this post is for you! I've been using Cricut machines for years, and I still remember that overwhelming feeling of staring at a brand new machine thinking, "Okay, now what?"

The good news? Cricut projects are so much easier than they look. Once you make your first one, you'll be hooked. I promise.

I even made a YouTube video walking through 7 of these projects step-by-step — watch it right here 👇

And if you want to grab any of the supplies I use, I've linked everything below through my affiliate link — shop here.

Now let's get into the projects!

1. Custom Vinyl Stickers

What you need: Cricut Joy or Maker, Cricut Vinyl, Transfer Tape

This is THE beginner project. Vinyl stickers are fast, easy, and incredibly satisfying to make. You can personalize water bottles, laptops, phone cases — literally anything with a smooth surface. Start with a simple word or shape, peel it off the mat, and use transfer tape to apply it. Done in under 15 minutes!

Pro tip: Cricut's permanent vinyl works great for items that will get wet (like water bottles). Use removable vinyl for things you might want to change later.

2. Personalized Keychains

What you need: Cricut Joy, Cricut Vinyl, Acrylic Keychains

Acrylic keychains are one of my absolute favorite beginner projects because they make such thoughtful gifts. You cut a small vinyl design or name, apply it to the acrylic blank, and boom — a personalized keychain that looks like it came from a boutique. Great for teachers, friends, coworkers, or yourself!

Pro tip: Start with a simple font or small icon design — intricate designs can be tricky to weed on small surfaces.

3. Custom Cards

What you need: Cricut Joy, Card Inserts, Card Mat, Cricut Joy Pens

Did you know your Cricut can write AND cut? The Cricut Joy is perfect for making gorgeous custom cards for birthdays, holidays, or just because. Use the card mat and pre-scored card inserts for the easiest results — Cricut Design Space has tons of free card templates to get you started.

Pro tip: Add a handwritten-style message inside using the Cricut pens — it makes cards feel extra personal.

4. Personalized Coasters

What you need: Cricut Joy, Infusible Ink Sheets, Sublimation Coasters, Heat Press or Regular Iron

You can use Infusible Ink to create custom coasters that look totally professional — and the best part is you don't need a fancy heat press! A regular household iron works just fine. These are perfect for housewarming gifts, holiday gifts, or home décor. A set of 4 matching coasters with a cute design or family name is one of the most popular things I make!

Pro tip: If using a regular iron, press firmly and hold for longer than you think you need to — good heat and pressure are key to a clean transfer.

5. Iron-On Baby Onesies or Bodysuits

What you need: Cricut Joy, Iron-On (HTV) Vinyl, Baby Bodysuit, Cricut Heat Press

Baby shower gift alert! Iron-on vinyl (also called HTV — heat transfer vinyl) lets you add custom designs to fabric. A sweet phrase or little animal on a plain white onesie becomes the cutest personalized baby gift. And it takes less than 20 minutes to make!

Pro tip: Remember to mirror your design before cutting iron-on vinyl — this trips up a LOT of beginners!

6. Personalized Glass Mugs with Vinyl

What you need: Cricut Joy, Smart Writable Vinyl or regular Cricut Vinyl, Glass Mugs

Want something simpler than Infusible Ink? You can also personalize glass mugs with regular permanent vinyl. Add a name, a funny quote, or a simple design. These are great for coffee lovers and make fantastic gifts. Hand wash only, though — vinyl doesn't love the dishwasher!

Pro tip: Use rubbing alcohol to clean the surface of the glass before applying vinyl for a better stick.

7. Tote Bag with Iron-On Vinyl

What you need: Cricut machine (any), Iron-On Vinyl, Plain Canvas Tote Bag, Heat Press or Iron

A personalized tote bag is one of the most practical beginner projects you can make. Grab a plain canvas tote from Amazon or a craft store, cut a fun design or quote in iron-on vinyl, and press it on. You'll have a custom bag in under 30 minutes. These are also great for markets, craft fairs, or gifts!

Pro tip: Use a Teflon sheet or parchment paper between your iron and the vinyl to protect the design while pressing.

8. Wood Sign with Vinyl Stencil

What you need: Cricut machine (any), Vinyl, Small Wooden Sign, Paint

This one is so satisfying! Cut a word or design from vinyl, apply it to a wooden sign as a stencil, paint over it, let it dry, then peel the vinyl off to reveal a crisp, clean design underneath. It looks like something you'd pay $40 for at a boutique — but you made it yourself in an afternoon!

Pro tip: Use painter's tape or stencil vinyl (not regular vinyl) so paint doesn't bleed underneath the edges.

9. Pantry Jar Labels

What you need: Cricut machine (any), Cricut Vinyl, Glass, or Plastic Jars

If you've ever seen those gorgeous, organized pantries on Pinterest with matching labels on every jar — yes, you can make those yourself with a Cricut! Cut simple text labels in your choice of font and color, apply them to your jars, and your pantry goes from cluttered to Pinterest-worthy in an afternoon. These are also great for spice jars, bathroom organization, or kids' storage bins.

Pro tip: Use matte black vinyl on clear glass jars for that classic, clean pantry aesthetic. Removable vinyl is a great choice here in case you want to update your labels later!

10. Custom Bookmarks

What you need: Cricut machine (any), Cardstock or Vinyl, Laminator (optional)

Super quick, super easy, and super cute — custom bookmarks are a great first project for total beginners. Use Cricut's Print Then Cut feature to design a colorful bookmark in Design Space, print it on cardstock, then let your Cricut cut it out perfectly. Laminate for durability. These make wonderful gifts for the readers in your life!

Pro tip: Print Then Cut is a great way to practice using Cricut Design Space without needing to learn vinyl weeding right away.
